The first days at our daycare in our nurseries in Luxembourg are crucial. Both the child and their parents must feel comfortable and confident. We implement a discovery period in several stages: an initial meeting, the first day, and a personalized adaptation week.
The first meeting before the first days at the daycare
A first meeting is organized between the daycare staff, the parents, and the child. This meeting takes place about a month before the child's arrival at the daycare.
During this time, parents can provide essential information for entrusting their child: their daily routine, sleep patterns, health, eating habits, favorite games, etc. Additionally, they can take their time to ask any questions they may have.
A complete tour of the daycare is also organized. The aim of this first meeting is to prepare the child's separation from his or her mother and father in the best possible conditions.
The educational team gets to know the child and their parents to welcome them as gently and calmly as possible. Our early childhood professionals will organize the group to help the new arrival integrate easily: daily schedule, placement in the room, participation in rotations, etc.
The nurse also receives the necessary advice regarding the child’s health and nutrition, and will consult the nutritionist if needed. Finally, the first meeting concludes with the selection of the child's arrival and adaptation dates at the daycare.
The first day at the daycare
The first day at the daycare is very important for both the child and their parents. It can sometimes be accompanied by some anxiety. Our educational staff is there to guide your children through this big moment with gentleness and serenity.
The child is welcomed by their designated educator and the daycare director. The director reviews the information received during the first meeting and updates it if necessary. He is there to talk to parents and reassure them.
The educator is present to engage with the child, establishing an important first connection for both the child and their parents. On this first day, the child stays for about one hour with his parents.
They observe and may join one of the activities for the children if they wish. The child can bring their favorite toy and a small photo of themselves to place in their locker or storage space.
The familiarization week
The first day at our daycare and childcare systems is followed by a personalized familiarization week. Each child and each parent has different needs. Our educational team adapts and takes the necessary time to make the daycare a place of life as calm as home. The familiarization period is adjusted based on:
- The family’s history (siblings, birth experience, etc.)
- The child’s social background and experience in a group setting
- The relationship and attachment to parents
- The child’s reactions and adaptation over the days
- The parents’ availability (especially depending on their work or maternity leave)
- The child’s age
Thus, various types of adaptation periods may be proposed by our team. Here is an example of a familiarization week:
- Day 1: The child stays with their parents, the designated educator, and the daycare director for about 1 hour.
- Day 2: The child stays with the other children and their educator for playtime lasting about 1 hour.
- Day 3: The child participates in mealtime with a parent and the educator.
- Day 4: The meal is given by the educator in charge. If the child is feeling well, he or she can stay for a nap.
- Day 5: The first separation from parents for a short day.
The familiarization week is never fixed. It is adjusted daily based on the child’s verbal or non-verbal reactions. Thus, the adaptation can be either slowed down or, conversely, accelerated depending on each child and their parents.
The adaptation period is considered complete when the child feels fully comfortable at the daycare and accepts their educator as a natural reference person.
